Stainless Steel 316 (UNS S31600) is an austenitic chromium-nickel-molybdenum stainless steel designed to provide improved corrosion resistance over Stainless Steel 304/304L in moderately corrosive environments. Often used in process streams containing chlorides or halides. The addition of molybdenum improves overall corrosion and chloride pitting resistance. It also improves creep strength, fracture strength, and tensile strength at high temperatures. 316L is commonly dual certified as 316 and 316L. Due to 316L's low carbon chemistry and nitrogen addition, 316L can achieve the mechanical properties of 316.
