Plasma cutting is a process that is used to cut steel and other metals of different thicknesses (or sometimes other materials) using a plasma torch. In this process, a gas (oxygen, air, inert and others dependant on material) is blown at high speed out of a nozzle; at the same time an electrical arc is formed through that gas from the nozzle to the surface being cut, turning some of that gas to plasma. The plasma is hot enough to melt the metal being cut and moves fast enough to blow molten metal away from the cut.
In modern CNC Plasma Cutting systems, end-to-end component design is highly automated using computer-aided design (CAD) and computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) programs. The programs produce a computer file that is interpreted to extract the commands needed to operate a particular machine via a post processor, and then loaded into the CNC machines for production. Since any particular component might require the use of a number of different tools drills, saws, etc., modern machines often combine multiple tools into a single "cell”. In other installations, a number of different machines are used with an external controller and human or robotic operators that move the component from machine to machine. In either case, the series of steps needed to produce any part is highly automated and produces a part that closely matches the original CAD design.

Plates above 40mm thick are normalised. For A 516 grade 65, which is one of most popular steels, the ASME standard composition is as follows (dependent on grade):ASTM A516 specification steel is used throughout the oil and gas, chemical and power generation industry and can be tested to exceed your specified requirements. HIC Testing is one such requirement as this material is used commonly in sour service/ wet h2s corrosive environments and so knowing how susceptible the material will be to hydrogen sulphide corrosion is imperative.
Normally the following steel grades are considered equivalent to ASTM/ASME A/SA516 Gr 60. In the US it is also known as PVQ516

A significant quantity of ASTM A516 Grade 65 boiler quality plate is used by pressure vessel manufacturers and fabricators making process equipment for the oil and gas industry. Some is also used for skid mounted pressure vessels and modules on production platforms and much is used in refineries and downstream processes.
Reliability of ASTM A516 Grade 65 Plates
Reliability is critical when you are fabricating a large pressure vessel. If you have to import pressure vessel plate from overseas and then find a defect in it you are faced with difficult decisions. Focusing on plates from mills with a great reputation for quality – and which the end user knows well – helps reduce the production risk.
Our experience is that ASTM A516 Gr 65 plates from German steel mills are more reliable and there are fewer defects – especially when the plates get thicker. For some companies purchasing German steel is like an insurance policy, but it helps prevent things going wrong to start with.
Along with the improved reliability there are also a range of other small benefits over steels from other origins. These include better physical and chemical characteristics – so that when the plates are retested the risk of them failing a test is far lower. Plates also often come with improved toughness and weldability etc.

ASTM A516 GRADE 60/65 HIC TESTED STEEL PLATES
HIC (Hydrogen Induced Cracking) is the result of a corrosive reaction between carbon steel and hydrogen sulphide. Wet hydrogen sulphide (H2S) cracking in steel has been a problem in petroleum refining and upstream oil and gas processing since the 1950s. Working conditions where wet H2S prevails are often described as sour service conditions and the term sour gas can be also be used in this context. As more fields rich in H2S are exploited, and this is increasingly the case, the problem is increasingly significant for equipment fabricated in potentially sensitive carbon-manganese (C-Mn) steels.
Steel in contact with water containing H2S will corrode producing hydrogen at its surface. H2S not only inhibits the formation of hydrogen gas, so reducing the opportunity for it to escape, but promotes its absorption in to the steel. At typical working temperatures below 200 degrees Celsius hydrogen atoms can become trapped causing embrittlement and ultimately cracking.
The use of steel pressure vessels in industries such as oil and gas processing requires a robust steel which is resilient to the long term corrosive effects of hydrogen sulphide in sour service applications. In order to provide better H2S resistance the properties of C-Mn steels have been progressively developed to improve chemistry, cleanliness, homogeneity, and microstructure
