WHAT is S690QL STEEL PLATE ?
S690QL Plasma Cutting is a high yield
structural steel grade produced in compliance with EN 10025:6:2004. The material is heat treated using the quench and temper process and has good bending and welding properties.nbsp;
S690QL Plasma Cutting A high strength structural steel supplied in quenched and tempered condition. The steel is designed to provide excellent welding and bending properties and it offers substantial possibilities for savings in material costs, processing and handing. Due to its high strength, it enables design of lighter, more durable and efficient products and structures.
It is possible to produce steel plates that have more than twice the strength of those produced from mild steel through a heat treatment process known as quenching and tempering. Steel is heated to a point above its upper critical temperature and is then very quickly cooled in water. This method of cooling, known as quenching, induces a transformation in the crystalline structure of the steel which leaves it much harder. Unfortunately the steel in this condition is also very brittle and it is not possible to use it in many applications. A method of heat treatment for alleviating this problem is called tempering and requires the quenched steel to be re-heated although this time to below the lower critical temperature. The result is to put toughness and ductility back in to the steel and, although some of the yield strength of the quenched steel is lost, the end result of the quenching and tempering process is to produce a strong steel which is also easy to weld, bend, and fabricate generally.
As the process of quenching and tempered has been improved and refined, carbon steel plates produced this way have become stronger and it is not uncommon now to find plates with strengths of more that 1100 MPa which is four times stronger than basic structural steel. Steel with minimum yield strength of 690 MPa has proved very popular with steel users because of its availability, price, and ease of fabrication. It is able to improve the performance, durability, and safety of vehicles, lifting equipment, and steel structures. Due to the steels high strength, structures can be designed lighter, payloads increased, and energy used more efficiently.
In Europe the structural steel specification EN 10025 includes a range of high strength quenched and tempered steel grades and the designation S690QL PLASMA CUTTING gives the parameters for steel with a minimum yield strength of 690 MPa.
One of the advantages that S690QL PLASMA CUTTING has over more traditional steels is that whilst on a per ton basis the plates are more expensive the construction costs can be significantly reduced. This is because far less steel over all is required, welding costs (even though welding is more difficult) is reduced and the costs for filler are also reduced. Additionally there are the cost savings to be made in operation due to lighter machinery meaning less structural support costs, energy costs for movement or both.

Cold Forming of S690Ql Plasma Cutting Steel Plates
The maximum allowable stress relieving temperature for S690QL PLASMA CUTTING is (560 C/1040 F) and cold forming takes place below this temperature. In order to reduce issues during cold forming of S690QL PLASMA CUTTING any flame cut or sheared edges in the bending area need to be ground before cold forming. Because cold forming can increase the hardness of the steel and reduce toughness the bending radius may often need to be increased over the minimums proscribed in manufacturer recommendations.
Hot Forming of S690QL PLASMA CUTTING Steel Plates
Hot forming of S690QL PLASMA CUTTING and other high yield steels is not recommended as the hot forming will remove the benefits of the mills tempering process. This means that the hot formed plate will then need to be tempered again. Given that much of the strength of the plate comes from the optimised tempering process any ad hoc tempering is likely to lead to quote different results than those of the initial plate. Consequently the MTC will not reflect the actual properties of the steel.
