Wear Plate is a registered trademark of SSAB Technology AB, Sweden. We are using this Trademark as General Tradename for the Abrasion and Wear Resistant Material.
Wear Resistant (AR) steel plate is typically made in the as-rolled condition. These types/grades of steel plate products have been developed
specifically for long service life in harsh conditions. AR products are suitable for a variety of applications in areas such as mining/quarrying, conveyors, material handling and construction, and earthmoving. Designers and
plant operators choose AR plate steel when striving to extend service life of critical components, and reduce the weight of each unit put into service. The benefits of employing
wear-resistant plate steel in applications involving impact and/or sliding contact with abrasive material are immense.
Steel plate for use in abrasive conditions is not typical because it is not governed by any ASTM code or spec. Many steel plate manufacturers produce their own brand of abrasion resistant steel and these are usually
distinguished by a brand name followed by the hardness of the steel which is measured in Brinell units. This range of steel plate products has been developed specifically for long service life in abrasive conditions.

Wear resistant steel plate is also known in the engineering industry by a variety of other names which include:

Steel plate for use in abrasive conditions is unusual in that it is more widely specified by a brand name than by a particular national or international steel specification. Many steel plate manufacturers produce their own brand of abrasion resistant steel and these are usually distinguished by a brand name followed by the hardness of the steel which is measured in Brinell units. The harder a steel the more difficult it is to fabricate and weld. For this reason steel with hardness of around 400 Brinell is the most commonly specified and used. However hot rolled steel plate products for more exacting abrasive conditions are readily available in 500 Brinell hardness while even harder steel plates are also manufactured.
Prosaic Steel & Alloys offers Wear Resistant Steel Plates. Wear resistant steel pates is used in areas where there is likely to be a high degree of abrasion or wear of the steel plate. Steels with a high HB rating (Brinel Hardness) are intended for applications where wear or abrasion resistance is important. The benefit of using an abrasion resistant steel is that that the plant, machinery or constructions working life can be extended considerably. This can significantly improve the reliability, durability and safety of structures and equipment.

The steel is quenched which provides wear resistance; in order to improve hardness it may also be tempered. Lower HB’s generally provide good cold bending properties and good weld ability. Weld ability is not generally
reduced as the hardness increases.
Wear resistant steels are not appropriate for use at temperatures over 250°C as the heat can cause changes to the material properties.
Testing is undertaken by firing 10mm steel or tungsten carbide ball at 29kN and the size of the resulting indentation is measured. Tests are carried out according to EN isO 6506 or ASTM E10. The figures below are
representative of 15mm thick 400HB and 500HB plates.
Yields for 400HB steel are in the region of 1100 MPa with tensile strengths of about 1250 MPa.
Wear resistant plates from Prosaic Steel & Alloys are available in the following dimensions and certificated to EN 10204 3.1 B, dependent on the product required.

Used throughout the mining and earthmoving industry, 450 AR is Wear Resistant Steel Plates with 450 brinell hardness.
The steel is a martensitic hardenable material with excellent high strength and hardness properties making it an ideal choice for heavy wear environments. Whilst the material cannot be heat treated, it is easy to cut and weld and has good formability.
The material is referred to as a 450 brinell hardness steel – the actual hardness range values for this grade relating to thickness are listed below:
Grade | Product | Thickness (mm) | Hardness Range (HBW) |
450 AR | Cut Lengths | 3.0 - 6.4 | 420 - 500 |

500 AR Wear Resistant Steel Plates (500 Brinell)
500 AR is a 500 brinell grade steel which is ideal for heavy wear applications commonly found in the mining and earth moving industry.
The material has excellent tensile strength and hardness, infact 500 AR has 3 times the hardness of S355 structural steel. The steel has a martensitic micro-structure and whilst heat treatment is not an option (since this would reduce the materials strength and abrasive qualities), 500 AR is easy to weld using conventional methods and has good formability.
The material is referred to as a 500 brinell hardness steel – the actual hardness range values for this grade relating to thickness are listed below:
Grade | Product | Thickness (mm) | Hardness Range (HBW) |

Quality 400HB Wear Resistant Steel Plates
Our 400HB and 500HB wear resistant plates are optimised in the steel making process to be effective in applications where adhesion, abrasion, surface destruction and tribochemical reactions are all degrading the plate surface. This relies on far more than increasing the hardness of the plate. A 500 HB AR plate for example will not necessarily have improved wear resistant characteristics than a 400 HB plate.
This means that good steel making is critical and we focus on reducing the phosphorous and sulphur contents to very low levels to maximise the possible toughness of the material. At the same time the alloy content is kept as low as possible to maximize the weldability of the plates – whilst maintaining the harden-ability as the plate thickness increases. This is a difficult balancing act – but for the thicker plates the CEV values are excellent allowing the welding of even thick plates (Indicative CEV of 0.64 at 120 mm)
Having excellent chemical properties is not enough though to provide superior wear resistant steel plate. To do this we use 2 of the most powerful rolling stands in the world to ensure that even the c0re of very thick wear resistant plates is deformed to ensure the high quality microstructure required for a high quality steel.
ALlaternatives and Equivalent of Wear Resistant Steel Plates
Because there are no standards for wear resistant steel plate – the focus is on the plate hardness – equivalent grades aren’t appropriate. However there are a number of different terms used
Wear Resistant Steel Plate is sleeved into plastic bag individually, pieces wrapped with water-proof material, bundled with nylon rope. Clear labels are tagged on the outside of the package for easy identification of the quantity and product I.D. Great care is taken during operation and transportation. Wear Resistant Steel Plate packing will be according to international standard in bundles strapped by strips then into containers to avoid any damage.
